Matt Clement, who in the spring decided he couldn't get back on the mound, has gone home.
The former Major League right-hander who won 87 games for four teams from 1998-2006 has been hired to coach boys basketball at his alma mater, Butler (Pa.) High School, as reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
A 1993 Butler grad who lettered in both baseball and basketball at the school, the 34-year-old takes over one of the state's prime basketball programs.
Clement takes over for Joe Lewandowski, dismissed after seven seasons on the job.
"I'm very excited and honored to get this opportunity, and I don't take this responsibility lightly," Clement told the Post-Gazette. "To coach these kids and lead these kids is something I've always wanted to do."
Clement beat out his former coach for the job: The other finalists for the Butler position included Mark Jula, currently at Center High School but who was at Butler during Clement's days.
A third-round pick by the Padres in the 1993 First-Year Player Draft, Clement was a double-digit winner five times. His best season was for the Red Sox in 2005, when he went 13-6. He went 35-36 for the Cubs from 2002-04.
Following two seasons lost to injuries, Clement formally announced his retirement on April 5. |
