The Cubs could have a new hitting coach as soon as Wednesday. According to a report on ESPNChicago.com, the Cubs will hire former Rangers hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo.
According to the report, Jaramillo will sign a three-year deal worth $2.42 million, making him the highest-paid hitting coach in the Major Leagues.
Jaramillo, 59, has been linked to the Cubs recently. He broke ties with the Rangers when the team offered him a one-year deal for 2010, not a multiyear contract with Texas, where he has been the hitting coach since 1995.
Rangers hitters won 17 Silver Slugger Awards, four Most Valuable Player Awards, three home run titles and three RBI crowns under Jaramillo.
The Rangers led the Majors in runs scored in 2008, but they dropped off a little in '09. The Cubs also had a drop off during the past two seasons. They led the National League with 855 runs scored in 2008, when they won 97 games, but they finished with 707 runs this year and ranked 10th.
Gerald Perry began the year as the Cubs' hitting coach, but he was relieved of his duties in June, and Von Joshua was promoted from Triple-A Iowa to take over.
The Cubs had hoped Joshua could get Geovany Soto, Ryan Theriot and Mike Fontenot on track, but the club opted not to keep Joshua with the big league team for 2010. Joshua will return to the Minor League club as its hitting coach.
Jaramillo worked with current Cubs Alfonso Soriano and Milton Bradley during their time in Texas. |
